New OtterBox Office Inspires Creativity

Located in distinguished downtown Fort Collins, Colo., 318 Canyon Ave. now houses the “brains” behind OtterBox®. The handheld technology case company’s product development, research and development, project management and supply chain departments are all settled into the newly remodeled 17,000-square-foot building.

With a capacity of more than 100, the Canyon building is currently accommodating 81 employees. The remainder of OtterBox employees will either move to the new corporate headquarters at 209 S. Meldrum St., scheduled to finish construction by June; in the expanding distribution center at 760 SE Frontage Road; at 401 Mountain Ave., Suite 200 or among three other office locations in development in Old Town, Fort Collins. OtterBox will soon have six locations in Fort Collins.

Nancy Richardson, president and founder of the company’s non-profit organization, OtterCaresSM and wife of OtterBox founder and CEO Curt Richardson, orchestrated the development of the new space on Canyon with collaboration from Oglesby Design and Vaught Frye Ripley Design Inc.

“This space is for the ‘brains’ behind OtterBox® products, so an inspiring workplace is needed to encourage their vision and creativity,” Nancy Richardson said. “The elements in this building are impressive; Oglesby Design and Vaught Frye Ripley Design went above our expectations to create a beautiful and cutting-edge home for employees.”

“I have been working with OtterBox on a couple of different buildings now and what I have learned is that they are constantly changing so it is important their space and furniture is flexible to allow them to move and grow in their variety of ways,” said Dawn Oglesby, lead designer and owner of Oglesby Design. “It warms my heart so much to walk through the finished space and watch how the ‘otters’ are really using the space. They are creating, moving and using the space in ways I never dreamed but had hoped the space would inspire.”

Rich, dark woods, brick and metal accents with organic eco-resins, vibrant colors and patterns flow through the facility’s three stories. As employees and visitors enter, industrial pendent lights peak through acoustical ceiling tiles and exposed ductwork above the second floor balcony. Bamboo flooring extends from the walls and to the ceiling at each elevator façade. Open office areas include natural carpet and tile patterns which mirror the ceiling features. Playful, interactive elements are featured such as SMART Board interactive whiteboards, writable wall surfaces, flat screen monitors with news and product information and digital conference room scheduling.

A state-of-the-art prototyping area for the product development and research and development departments features enhancements to increase acoustic privacy. In addition to this specialized area, four coffee bars are included along with other spaces to accommodate individual focus, group collaboration and brainstorming.
